PTA 101: Introduction to Physical Therapy

In addition, basic terminology and concepts of applied kinesiology will also be covered. Laboratory experiences will include visualizing cadaver dissections and obtaining a working knowledge of applied surface anatomy. Prerequisite: Admission into the PTA Program.

3 semester hours (2 hours theory, 3 hours of laboratory per week) An examination of the principles and practices of physical therapy with the development of an understanding of the following procedures: body mechanics, positioning, transfers, wheelchair management, activities of daily living, balance, first aid, sensory assessment, bandaging, asepsis/isolation techniques, assessing vital signs, an introduction to PNF and massage techniques, bed traction, and assistive devices for ambulation. Students will also gain an understanding of normal and abnormal human posture and gait, as well as the beginning applications of therapeutic exercise as related to the treatment of abnormal posture and gait. Prerequisite: PTA 104.

Both basic principles and clinical applications of such modalities will be presented. Prerequisites: PTA 110 and PTA 115.
