The course will explore analysis and practical application of various arranging techniques including chord-scale voicings, melodic voice-leading, and harmonization of melodies. Students will learn how to arrange for medium and advanced level ensembles. Analysis and application of arranging techniques utilized by noted arrangers from various jazz eras (swing, bebop, post-bop, contemporary). A final arranging project is required for completion of the course.

The course will synthesize arranging/composing styles with the improvisational techniques that comprise the literature of different periods. Students will demonstrate knowledge of different forms and structures utilized by noted arrangers and composers. Students will develop sufficient repertoire of jazz and standard tunes for performance and teaching at high school/college levels.

Jaczko Required of:None Electable by:All except MPED majors Offered:Spring, Summer, Fall Description With the proliferation of low-cost, high-quality music technology, most musicians now have the means to make a commercial album without the support of a record label, and often are required to fill the role of producer and possibly engineer. This course surveys the general production process from concept through mastering, with an emphasis on self-produced independent projects. Although there is no hands-on coursework, students will develop detailed plans for a legitimate recording project of their choice.

Jaczko Required of:MPED majors Electable by:MPED majors Offered:Spring, Summer, Fall Description This course will explore the fundamentals of analog and digital audio, including recording consoles: design, function, and signal flow; principles of signal processing: reverberation, delay, equalization, compression, and other effects; introduction to microphone and loudspeaker technology; and introduction to music production and recording techniques in both analog and digital media. Class meetings are principally lecture sessions combined with in-class demonstration and some student hands-on training. Assignment-based lab time required.
