A minimum of 450 clock hours practice teaching in kindergarten to grade 12 is required. Critique and evaluation of problems encountered in student teaching certification assignments in the public schools. Weekly seminar meetings are supervised by the Music Education Department chair.

Ensemble courses will encompass a number of different ensemble formats and jazz styles.

Marvuglio Required of:MMJ pedagogy emphasis Electable by:MMJ only Offered:Spring, Fall Description Intensive private study of jazz technique, repertoire, and improvisation skills on the student's principal instrument or voice. Jazz Applied Music requirements and levels are determined by the instructor and confirmed by the faculty jury through periodic examination. Music performance majors are assigned a one-hour private lesson weekly for three credits. Students may elect additional instruction at extra cost.

McClellan Required of:MMJ Pedagogy emphasis Electable by:MMJ Only Offered:Fall Description A practical and in-depth study of improvisational techniques developed during various periods of jazz (swing, bebop, post-bop, contemporary). The course will focus on melodic development, harmonization, study and analysis of literature, and style development. Students will learn how to practice and develop the skills necessary for individual and group improvisation.

McClellan Required of:MMJ Pedagogy emphasis Electable by:MMJ Only Offered:Spring Description An organized and sequential approach to teaching jazz improvisation. Exploration of proven methods and materials for conveying the art of jazz improvisation to learners. The course will examine various styles of improvisation in small ensemble and big-band settings. Students will be required to demonstrate both improvisational and pedagogical skills as well as knowledge of student learning outcomes.

Marvuglio Required of: None Electable by: MMJ students only Offered: Fall Description Development of an inclusive theory of harmony which bridges tonal and chromatic approaches, and includes both jazz and classical sources. Students will develop the ability to assess and modify harmonic schemes with the goal of systematic growth and increased individuality in their playing and writing.

Marvuglio Required of:None Electable by:MMJ students only Offered:Spring Description A study of the principles of temporal articulation and elaboration, including subdivision in various multiples, resultant rhythms, metric modulation, and odd meters. Students will develop the ability to hear and play increasingly advanced rhythmic ideas while remaining oriented in the prevailing rhythmic context or groove, and to utilize a more supple and flexible approach to rhythmic inflection through the controlled use of rubato.

McClellan Required of:None Electable by:MMJ Only Offered:Fall Description A practical experience in planning, executing, and evaluating effective rehearsals of jazz ensembles in a variety of genres. The course will focus on effective rehearsal techniques to prepare groups for stage or recording studio performances. Projects will be assigned and students will be encouraged to rehearse groups to complete projects and assignments. Emphasis will be placed on the development of leadership skills and effective management of students and professional level ensembles.
