The course will focus on critical approaches to literature, introduce bibliographic resources, and continue development of writing proficiency. Prerequisite: SPAN 303, or consent of instructor. 4 hours This is a course for students with an intermediate level of proficiency in Spanish and who seek to move to an advanced level through the semester abroad in Montevideo. Content will include extended narration and dialogue, articulation and pronunciation skills, register and development of richer vocabulary. Students will work individually and in small groups to complete task-based assignments and presentations. Frequent assessment of speaking skills. Prerequisite: admission to Montevideo program. (S)

4 hours This course will be an examination of Latin American history broadly as well as through the particular historical context of Uruguay. Students will study topics such as conquest and colonization, independence movements and leaders, populism, miscegenation, and democracy and authoritarianism in the continent and in Uruguay particularly. In addition to traditional history texts and documents, students will look at recent films and periodicals in an effort to understand contemporary methods of representing Latin America's history. 4 hours A seminar with rotating topics on Spanish peninsular literature and culture. Topics may include the Spanish Civil War, literature by Spanish women writers, the history of Spanish film, Golden Age Spanish literature, and others. Significant writing practice, including a research project. Assessment of speaking proficiency. May be repeated for credit up to three times under three different topics. 4 hours This course, offered in Spanish, explores the cultural history and current situation of U.S. Latinos and Hispanics. Students read and analyze short stories, novel, autobiographies, and poetry representative of Cuban-American, Puertorican, Mexican-American, Dominican-American, and other Latino authors with special emphasis on bilingualism, ethnicity, and gender in identity formation.
