4 hours This course will be an examination of Latin American history broadly as well as through the particular historical context of Uruguay. Students will study topics such as conquest and colonization, independence movements and leaders, populism, miscegenation, and democracy and authoritarianism in the continent and in Uruguay particularly. In addition to traditional history texts and documents, students will look at recent films and periodicals in an effort to understand contemporary methods of representing Latin America's history. Prerequisite: admission to Montevideo program. (Hist, Intcl)
