    1 credit This course is only offered to students who have satisfactorily completed SMP 1001N. It will apply in a practical manner all the techniques taught in SMP 1001N. This course directs itself to application more so than Education. Students are evaluated Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: SMP 1001N or per mission of the instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    2 credits This is a seminar to be taken concurrently with the first student field work course or the first coaching techniques course. The course correlates closely with the experiences of student coaching. Discussions center on areas of unique problems and situations in coaching, as well as areas of methodology of coaching and application of mechanical principles for specific sport skill analysis. Prerequisites: SMP 1033N, 1040A. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    2 credits This is a field work course for specific sport coaching experiences. Students select the sport (sports) desired for qualification. The student will work closely with a highly qualified supervising coach as a student assistant in a selected secondary school setting. Depending on the school setting, the student will work daily either: for a whole junior high sport season, or seven consecutive weeks in a high school setting encompass ing at least 100 hours. Students must register for each sport in which qualification is desired. Those students registering for fall sport field work experiences must preregister and be interviewed the previous spring. Prerequisites: SMP 1033N, 1040A. Corequisite: SMP 2042N for first field work expe rience only. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    2 credits This is a course designed as an alternative to SMP 2043N and is intend ed for select students. Qualified students select the techniques course(s) relevant to each sport in which certification is desired. Topics include game preparation situation, game strategy, scouting, effective use of per sonnel, practice planning, specific sport training, teaching and analyzing skills and team play, score keeping, record keeping, and statistics. In addi tion to the techniques classes, the student is required to observe, evalu ate, prepare and teach for at least six (6) hours in an approved college sport program. Students are evaluated Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: SMP 1033N, 1040A. Corequisite: SMP 2042N (With first techniques course only) Student must have permission of both the Department Coordinator and instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits A study of the biomechanical principles that affect movement and athletic performance. The student will explore fundamental movement patterns, sport specific movement skills, and the most effective tech niques for analysis. Students will also learn how to apply this knowledge as a teaching and coaching tool. Prerequisite: SMP 1023N or SMP 1040A, or per mission from instructor. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits An intensive study of the rapidly growing field of Sport Medicine. The course provides a basic overview of the focus and operation of a sport medicine facility and as it relates to the care of an athlete. Topics include: mechanisms of athletic injuries, injury care, sports injury rehabilitation, therapeutic modalities, pharmacology and athletic performance, and nutrition and its physiological/psychological effects. Prerequisite: SMP 1033N or BIO 1002A/1004A. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits This course provides the students with a background in leadership theory, and styles of leadership. Students will further explore personal leadership styles, interpersonal communication, group communication, and the skills and competencies of sport leaders. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits This course provides the student with the theoretical background nec essary to become a sport management professional. Topics included in this course will be functions of management, the planning process, orga nizational behavior, personnel management, economics and sport, and the theories of management. Prerequisites: ECN 2002A, MGT 2075N, MGT 3108N, and SMP 1039N. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits This course is designed to acquaint students with activities and pro grams appropriate for aged adults. The benefits and relationship of phys ical activity and exercise will be discussed. Special considerations for con ditions and disease such as CVD, arthritis, obesity, diabetes and cancer will be explored. Exercise testing and appropriate exercise guidelines spe cific to the elderly will be included. Offered: 2008 - 2010.

    3 credits This course is a discussion of food nutrition, dietary requirements, and nutrients for older adult populations. Role of ethnic, social, econom ic, psychological, and physiological factors influencing dietary attitudes will be covered. Specific issues such as malnutrition, supplementation, nutrient diseases and disorders related to the aged will also be covered. Offered: 2008 - 2010.
