3 Credits This course reinforces and augments the vocabulary and skills introduced in the first semester course. Using role play based on real life situations, students will practice pronunciation and communication skills while increasing active vocabulary. Reading and comprehension will be reinforced with selected excerpts from literature, poetry, and media which emphasize French history, culture, and traditions. This course likewise will be taught using the immersion technique. Prerequisite: FRE101 or one year of high school French or permission of the instructor.

3 Credits This beginning course is designed to give students basic fluency in spoken and written German. Students will learn pronunciation and basic sentence and question patterns necessary to converse effectively and appropriately in everyday situations. Students will also learn to read signs, menus, and timetables, as well as simple prose. In addition, discussions about the country, its people, and customs will give students an understanding and appreciation of the culture. This course is taught using the immersion technique; that is, the class is taught in the foreign language itself.

3 Credits This course provides students with additional opportunities to practice speaking and listening in real-world situations. Besides role play, students will also listen to lectures and view films in German. Selected readings in literature and history will provide reading practice as well as the basis for discussion of German culture and traditions. Students will write short reaction papers to these presentations to practice their writing skills. This course likewise will be taught using the immersion technique. Prerequisite: GER102 or two years of high school German or permission of the instructor.

3 Credits While providing students with additional opportunities to practice their language skills in German, this course takes the student beyond conversational German to the level of discussion. Here students are expected to express ideas and rationalize opinions based on their understanding of selected German poetry and fiction. Students will become familiar with the vocabulary of literary critique and will write reaction papers based on their reading. Students will also receive an overview of German literary tradition. This course will be taught primarily in German, but some presentations may require clarification in English. Prerequisite: GER201 or three years of high school German or permission of the instructor.

3 Credits Students will read and discuss a selection of 20th Century German literature, some in translation and some in the original German, including poetry, short stories, and novels. German culture as well as historical events greatly influenced German literature during this tumultuous period. In addition, students will be exposed to the cultural diversity of German language and literature. Discussion will be augmented by films as well as occasional guest speakers. German students will also practice writing a formal paper in German. Pre/Co-requisite: GER 201 or permission of the instructor.

3 Credits Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer-based systems used to collect, store and analyze geographic information. This introductory course in GIS is designed to provide basic knowledge of GIS theories and applications. Mathematical concepts and methods involved in this course include using geographic and Cartesian coordinate systems, analysis of basic statistical data, and construction of maps and charts using computer software. In addition, mathematical and computer concepts and methods underlie our study of remote sensing, geographic information systems, and computer cartography. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites but some background in cartography, computer science or geography is helpful. You NEED to be a proficient computer user. Basic understanding of Microsoft windows directory structure and how applications work in that environment are necessary skills.

3 Credits This unit aims to develop an understanding of raster-based approaches to GIS and related areas of image processing in remote sensing. Topics covered include raster data models and data compression techniques, raster GIS and cartographic modeling, imaging systems and image processing, geometric correction techniques, and GIS / remote sensing integration in the raster domain. This course relives the first half of this journey, exploring the roots of western civilization and its impact through the Dark Ages and Medieval times.
