3 Credits This course emphasizes principles of clear written communication for informational, analytical, and persuasive purposes. The course stresses both the writing process and the writing situation consisting of subject, audience, and purpose. By learning to assess communication needs, students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills and then use these skills to guide the writing process in a variety of communication forms. Students learn to gather and select information and to choose organizing and formatting strategies that result in clear written documents. Class activities include writing in a computerized writing lab; therefore, keyboarding skills are required. Prerequisite: CPT117 or equivalent or demonstrated keyboarding skills.

3 Credits This humanities course will provide students with the opportunity for personal growth and an insight into social problems as revealed through literature. Students will read and discuss a selection of short stories, plays, poems and novels.

3 Credits A workshop course for those who wish to express themselves imaginatively in poetry, fiction, or drama. This course covers research for writing, cultivation of good writing habits, revising and editing, as well as discussion of strategies for publication. Prerequisite: ENG101.

3 Credits Rich in sensation and sense, poetry may be the most expressive of literary genres. In its many forms - from lyric, to ballad, from rhyming and rhythmic to free verse - poetry touches a diversity of individual, social, and cultural worlds. It gives voice to the emotions and ideas that shape human experience. This course helps students to understand and respond to poetic expression. Students will discover poetry, not as a mystery of hidden artistic expression, but as an understandable and enriching art form.Pre/Co-requisite: ENG101 or ENG108.

3 Credits Professional Writing examines and applies the principles, methods and forms needed to produce clear and effective business correspondence, resumes, job application letters and formal reports. This course builds upon writing and grammar skills while also emphasizing the responsibility of the writer to thoroughly understand the information being communicated, to organize that information effectively, and to present the information in a format, tone, and style appropriate to the specific audience. Collaborative work is included as an essential skill in professional communication. Students have access to a computerized writing lab, so previous word processing experience is required. Prerequisites: ENG101, ENG108 or ENG103; and AOT100, AOT101, or CPT117 or permission of instructor.

3 Credits A survey of American writers from Colonial times to the present will be read, studied and discussed. This course will provide students with the opportunity to examine the personal, historical, cultural and social contexts reflected in American Literature. Prerequisite: ENG101 or ENG121.

3 Credits Students will read and discuss a selection of 20th Century German literature in translation, including poetry, short stories, and novels. German culture as well as historical events greatly influenced German literature during this tumultuous period. In addition, students will be exposed to the cultural diversity of German language and literature. Discussion will be augmented by films as well as guest speakers. Prerequisites: ENG 101 or ENG 121.

3 Credits This course will introduce learners to the effect of interrelationships among environmental issues, society, and the individual. Participants in this course will study ecological principles of the earth, atmosphere, and water as a precursor for addressing the forms, causes and impacts of major environmental issues. The students will then delve into the measures needed to address environmental protection. The students will integrate interactions among scientific evidence, economic forces and societal involvement - at the personal as well as the political scale - involved in environmental science. This course will attempt to lay the groundwork for the basic understanding of how nature works, the connections between humans and nature and how human activities have impacted ecosystem functions. Through readings and discussions, students will also explore many of the most important and controversial environmental issues that face our world today, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Endangered Species protection, Global Warming, and Genetically Modified Organisms, and attempt to do so from multiple sides of these debates. This course will be enlightening for anyone who has even a passing interest in the environment or nature and for anyone who wants to learn more about environmental issues.Pre/co-requisites: high school biology and chemistry, or permission of instructor.

3 Credits This theory/lab course is designed as a hands-on approach to understanding the fundamentals of computer technology in preparation for the CompTIA A+? Essentials Certification Exam. Topics such as: PC system builds and hardware configurations, PC system components, operating system installation, operating system configurations, operating system architecture, the command line, storage media, peripherals, laptops and portable, printers, network setup and security will be covered in detail. Much emphasis will be placed upon communication and professionalism with a view towards the computer technology service industry. Application projects employing the Microsoft Office Suite will be required. Prerequisite: Introductory Computer Skills
