    An exploration of the field of ecology, with emphasis on ecosystem function and structure, biodiversity, interrelationships of plant and animal communities, population dynamics, biogeography, and a survey of representative ecosystems.     Students in the course will live in and study four different tropical ecosystems. The course starts in San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica from there students travel to the lowland rainforest of LaSelva, the dry tropical forest of Polo Verde National Park. The cloud forest of Mentenevde and the Pacific Costal forest of Manuel Autonia National Park. The course will also visit and explore two active volcanoes.     The loss of biodiversity is one of the preeminent environmental issues of the 21st century. This course provides an in-depth survey of a broad range of ecological concepts related to the preservation and conservation of biodiversity. The connection between theory and applications at all ecological scales (individual organisms, populations, species, communities, ecosystems, biomes) is emphasized.
