In class we will discuss things such as azimuth, bearing, declination, various kinds of maps, and the different scales that are used in determining distance. We will discuss aerial photos and how they are used in resource work along with legal descriptions for the locations of various parcels of land. The lab will be field oriented and the use of various compasses, pacing techniques, and using transits will be covered as much as possible. It includes taxonomy and nomenclature, the learning of specific characteristics and terminology used to identify trees. The course discusses the sivical requirements of trees as well as observing the native trees of the area and relating them to the other species across the U.S. Both summer and winter characteristics of trees are discussed and students will use dichotomous keys to identify twigs and fruit.
