Incorporating 20th century texts in the analytic tradition, the central topic areas will include the following: Truth and Meaning, Reference and Descriptions, Metaphor, Names and Speech Act Theory. The final section of the class will be devoted to an evaluation of the early vs. the later Wittgenstein’s view of language. The course examines (l) the Constitutional basis of American politics, (2) the national institutions that are involved in decision making and public debate (for example, the Presidency and the bureaucracy, the Federal Courts, the Congress, Political Parties, the media), (3) the issues that Americans argue about (rights and liberties, economic benefits, foreign policy), and (4) the processes by which those arguments are conducted and resolved (campaigns and elections, administrative action, legislation, lobbying, publicity).
