Examines the differences between art and non-art utilizing theories which couple art with representation, with expression of emotion, and with perception among other things. Examples for discussion drawn from the visual arts, music and literature. Prerequisite: PH 112A. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in philosophy. Three hours a week.

This course will offer a critical examination of philosophical theories concerning the nature of language. Incorporating 20th century texts in the analytic tradition, the central topic areas will include the following: Truth and Meaning, Reference and Descriptions, Metaphor, Names and Speech Act Theory. The final section of the class will be devoted to an evaluation of the early vs. the later Wittgenstein’s view of language. Prerequisites: PH 112A and another course in philosophy or the permission of the instructor. Three hours a week.

A course in epistemology addressing questions about what knowledge is and how we justify our knowledge claims. Major theories of truth based upon ideas of correspondence, coherence, and pragmatism will be examined. Other topics will include: relativism, skepticism, foundationalism, naturalized epistemology, the myth of the given, etc. Prerequisites: PH 112A and another course in philosophy or the permission of the instructor. Three hours per week.

A course in metaphysics addressing questions about the ultimate “Why” of things. Examines the work ofsuch classic masters as Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, and Heidegger and addresses such questions as the nature of space and time, the relation of mind and body, freedom and determinism, the limits of human knowledge, immortality, and the existence of God. Prerequisites: PH 112A and another course in philosophy or the permission of the instructor. Three hours a week.

An intensive study of central problems in ethical theory and moral reasoning. The course will be devoted to one or more major work, theme, or figure from the history of ethics or contemporary moral philosophy. Prerequisites: PH 112 and a course in ethics or values. Three hours a week.

A survey of the fruitful approaches to philosophy on the Continental European scene. Authors to be discussed include the Germans Husserl, Heidegger, and Habermas, as well as the French Derrida, Foucault, and Lyotard. Special attention is given to Gadamer’s hermeneutics.Prerequisites: PH 112A and another course in philosophy or the permission of the instructor. Three hours a week.

Allows upper class students who have acquired sufficient knowledge through a variety of courses in philosophy to pursue an intensive program of readings in a specialized area under the direction of a member of the department. Requires the approval of the Chair. Three hours a week.

An introduction to the American political system. The course examines (l) the Constitutional basis of American politics, (2) the national institutions that are involved in decision making and public debate (for example, the Presidency and the bureaucracy, the Federal Courts, the Congress, Political Parties, the media), (3) the issues that Americans argue about (rights and liberties, economic benefits, foreign policy), and (4) the processes by which those arguments are conducted and resolved (campaigns and elections, administrative action, legislation, lobbying, publicity). No prerequisites. Required for the political science major. Satisfies the social science distribution requirement. Three hours a week.
