This course will offer a critical examination of philosophical theories concerning the nature of language. Incorporating 20th century texts in the analytic tradition, the central topic areas will include the following: Truth and Meaning, Reference and Descriptions, Metaphor, Names and Speech Act Theory. The final section of the class will be devoted to an evaluation of the early vs. the later Wittgenstein’s view of language. Prerequisites: PH 112A and another course in philosophy or the permission of the instructor. Three hours a week.
