Includes an in-depth experience of the ecology of Martha's Vineyard and the historical, cultural, and artistic traditions of the island and explorations of Native American, African-American, Portuguese, and European cultures. Students pursue individualized research and writing in areas of particular interest.

The cultural connection between Quebec and New England will be explored. The institute provides opportunities for cross-cultural comparisons between Canada and the United States in areas such as bilingual education, issues of ethnic diversity, and political-economic systems. Students pursue individualized research and writing in areas of particular interest.

4 credits Learning the language of ecology is A goal of This course. Literature and worldviews that define and describe ecological literacy will be the foundation for examining our teaching practice. The inclusion and integration of ecological principles into the curriculum addresses the need for educating an ecoliterate populace. Students will identify best practices for integrating new insights and methods from the summer field experience into effective, ecologically literate teaching.

Students will explore how the land has shaped the history, culture, and artistic traditions of Ireland.
