Offered on Demand Traces the history and development of the detective story from its beginnings in Poe through a study of such writers as Conan Doyle, G.K. Chesterton, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, and others. Conditions of setting, foreshadows, elements of plot and character, and rules of dramatic action, are definitions applied to the works under study. This course meets the CLAC I Literature requirement.

Fall and Spring Semesters Strengthens the student’s ability to define a topic and to support ideas with evidence. Emphasis on writing organized, coherent, unified essays for different audiences and in different formats, and on producing carefully proofread final drafts. Themed sections offer students the option of focusing on a particular area of study. Prerequisite: Successful completion of ES 1060, or demonstrated proficiency on the Writing Inventory.

Fall Semester Focuses on good essay writing with particular attention to developing longer essays, and to re-writing and editing skills. The course is for people with a strong background in writing and who enjoy improving the quality of their work. Prerequisite: Demonstrated proficiency on the Writing Inventory.

Offered Periodically Considers the whole human, including masculine and feminine aspects, through writing short essays and readings on the roles of men and women in stories, poems, and plays. Newer images of feminine, of masculine, and of their integration are then explored. This course meets the CLAC I Literature requirement.

Fall and Spring Semesters Applies the elements of good essay writing and critical thinking to longer essays. Emphasis on gathering, sorting and organizing evidence in written reports and arguments, and on the proper use of sources in rersearch writing. Prerequisite: ENG 1280 or ENG 1290, or equivalent skills.

Fall and Spring Semesters This course involves intensive work on writing and research skills for those students with a strong background in writing and a desire to imporve the quality of their work, and their independence as a writer. Prerequisite: ENG 1290.

Fall and Spring Semesters Provides students with practical work experience on the staff of the College newspaper, The Currier Times, either in writing, photography or production. Students are required to attend weekly news meetings. (Same course as COM 1501, GD 1501). Prerequisite: A freshman-level writing course or basic photography course. Catalog 2007-08 81

Offered Periodically Offers experience in practical criticism. Texts will be examined closely to find out what is really being said. Students will learn how to identify bias and logical fallacies. Using this approach, the students will quickly learn to recognize the concealed persuasive tactics within poetry, prose, and films, and assess these tactics. Prerequisite: Six (6) credits of English at the 1000-level.
