    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course will examine the translation of various literary genres from different periods of Hispanic literature, both Peninsular and Latin American, into various audio/visual media. An exploration of how literature and audio/visual media create, shape, reinforce, and/or change culture and impact its images, stereotypes, and archetypes will be examined. Theoretical approaches to the adaptation of literature into other media will be studied. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC

This course traces the principal currents of Hispanic culture through Europe and the New World. Using a thematic approach, it traces the historic, political and economic development of the Spanish speaking people, and presents the highlights of Hispanic achievements from the standpoint of civilization and culture. Study of fundamental grammatical principles and sentence structures with drills and translations. (Special emphasis on uses of the Imperfect and the Preterite and the phonetic rules of the accent.)     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is a study of the culture of the Chicano/Mexican American student. It analyzes the family, religious institutions, contributions, advancements, and problems of the Chicano/Chicana in the United States and aids students in achieving self-identification and understanding their relationship to their own community. This course, conducted in English, develops insight into the special nature of Chicano/Chicana culture for those outside that culture.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: SPAN 282 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course consists of in-depth oral discussion of cultural topics, including modern family life, the job market, advertising in the business world, pastimes and amusements, economy versus ecology, the world of travel and multiculturalism. Emphasis is on the acquisition of appropriate vocabulary and language patterns, and the creative development of arguments. This course, conducted in Spanish, is recommended for all Spanish majors.     Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation.
