This course provides a review and in-depth study of Japanese grammatical concepts. Reading and interpretation of literary works by Japanese writers and guided and original compositions are included. It continues the review ofgrammatical concepts, and requires written composition and oral discussion. This course gives the student practice in speaking and understanding Japanese as used in travel, in the home, in school, and in everyday life. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, idioms and language patterns fundamental to an active and practical use of Japanese. This course develops the appreciation of the Japanese culture.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: JAPN 281 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course provides intensive oral practice in the discussion of current topics, including multiculturalism in Japanese-speaking countries. Emphasis is on the acquisition of special idioms and vocabulary suitable for conversation about the family, the world of work, business, sports, public transportation and ecology.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: JAPN 282 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course provides intensive oral practice in discussion of controversial topics and expressing informed opinions regarding current affairs, the arts, and political issues. Emphasis is on the acquisition of appropriate vocabulary and language patterns, and the creative development of arguments. This course, conducted in Japanese, is recommended for all Japanese majors.     Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 52 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course focuses on the principles of newsgathering and newswriting, with emphasis on journalistic writing. Basic news story structure and development, news evaluation, newsgathering methods, interviewing, craftsmanship, and reporting techniques in general are explored. Newspaper and other news and information media are analyzed. The course is particularly recommended for English and communications majors and those planning careers in news media, public relations, communications, corporate communications and news and informational media. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC* *UC credit limits may apply. JOUR 101 and JOUR 201 combined: maximum credit, one course.

    Class hours: 1.0 Lecture/3.0 Laboratory Recommendation: JOUR 101 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher or concurrent enrollment, and satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 52 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course focuses on media article writing using the school newspaper, Talon Marks, as a practical laboratory. Student research, write, and edit articles for the school paper as they practice the skills of gathering information from a variety of sources, synthesizing a story and preparing it for dissemination to others. Ethics and legal aspects of communication are also covered. This course may be taken for a maximum of 4 times. Credit/No Credit option available for non-journalism majors. Transfer Credit: CSU
