    Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours inthe semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation.     Class hours: 0.7 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Corequisite: Current CPR for Professional Rescuer Certification. This course will provide the student with knowledge and skills concerning the theoretical and procedural requirements for performing electrocardiography. This course follows the guidelines set forth by both state and national regulations.

    Class hours: 0.7 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory This course will provide the student with knowledge and skills concerning the theoretical and procedural requirements for performing several lab procedures. This course follows guidelines set forth by both state and national regulations including, but not limited to, the parameters of waived testing as set by CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988).

    Class hours: 0.7 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory This class provides thirty hours of Phlebotomy training, in classroom instruction and hands-on application. Topics of instruction and testing include, but are not limited to the following: venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training, anatomy and physiology of the vascular system, patient care and special considerations, equipment selection, and blood processing. This course does not meet requirements for state certification for phlebotomist.

    Class hours: 1.0 Lecture Prerequisite: MATH 40 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher or satisfactory completion of the Math Placement Process. This course presents skills and concepts utilized to calculate drug dosage. Problem solving, application of basic algebraic concepts, formulas, proportional relationships, systems of measurement, and measurement system conversions will be included. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times.

    Class hours: 0.5 Lecture The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider course is designed to meet the needs of healthcare professionals who respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies. Content includes initial management of cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and airway obstruction in the infant, child and adult populations as well as two rescuers CPR, and use of automated external defibrillator (AED). This course may be taken for a maximum of 4 times. This course is offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only.

    Class hours: 3 lecture Corequisite: HO 9L. This course is designed to teach the student the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to perform pre-hospital emergency care. The didactic portion will present various Basic Life Support (BLS) assessment tools that are included in the Emergency Medical Technician-I (Basic) scope of practice. Areas of instruction include scene and physical patient assessment, safe and the proper utilization of emergency medical equipment. The information presented will assist in the development of critical thinking skills required to complete a systematic and nationally standardized approach to caring for the ill and injured patient. Successful candidates in HO 9 and HO9L will be eligible for verification of course completion. The combination of HO9 and HO 9L meets the didactic, certifying skills exam, and clinical experiences set forth in the California Code of Regulations for Emergency medical Technician hours of instruction. Additional testing and certification process is required to use the name Emergency Medical Technician-I Basic. This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times and does not guarantee state certification.
