All clerkship activities will be under the direction of an experienced practitioner. The student will develop competency in the following critical elements of this model: communication with practitioners and patients, assessment and monitoring of drug therapy, disease state management, patient education and effective pharmacy management. The student will be sensitized to issues regarding health care and medical practice in a rural setting and provided with an opportunity to apply communication skills and drug/disease management outside of urban hospital and clinic settings. They will learn through collaboration with other interdisciplinary team members, working with collaborative partners in the communities and people of different cultures. Students will provide a widerange of clinical services through participation in medical team rounds, conducting drug regimen reviews and preparing drug information responses. Practice sites include longterm care facilities, community mental health foster care homes, substance abuse residential homes, hospice and home-care settings. Students will gain advanced training in order to more accurately assess patient responses to drug therapy, better formulate appropriate patient specific regimens and more accurately communicate information to other health care professionals.
