    This course is a continuation of ESL102 and provides the advanced level (SPL Level 8/9) non-native English speaker with instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding Standard American English. Emphasis is placed on developing the ability to read and write essays from college-level works in English; ability to compose short essays and coherent compositions; and the ability to discuss materials written at the college level. Prerequisite: ESL102 or satisfactory basic skills assessment score / 3 credits.

    This is a training course for peer tutors. Through readings, journal responses, discussions, and practical experience, the course introduces students to the theories used in writing center work as well as the practical application of those theories. Tutors will peer-critique, self-monitor, and tutor. The main objective is for students to become effective peer tutors and better writers. Prerequisite: Faculty recommendation and B+ or higher in a compostion course / 1, 2 or 3 credits. May be repeated for credit; 3 credits maximum. Offered in the Fall, Spring, and Summer.

    This course is a variation of ETU100. It has many of the components of the original course except that it is geared to tutors of children. It provides an opportunity to participate in an increasing popular, growing area of community service - the tutorial. By means of videotape viewing, readings, discussion, and supervised practicum in the local schools, students will participate in a comprehensive training experience designed to thoroughly familiarize him/her with the tutoring process. Prerequisite: Faculty recommendation / 3 credits.

    This course is designed to: provide in-service training in English as a Second Language, classroom methods and strategies for both ESL teaching assistants and mainstream classroom teachers; create a cadre of ESL teaching assistants to support Limited English Proficient (LEP) students; and, model appropriate methods, techniques and strategies for supporting the learning of newcomer and immigrant students in the classroom. Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on CPT or satisfactory completion of ENL050 / 3 credits.

    The course will examine information, concepts and knowledge for influencing changes in health-related behavior so that the student may make decisions that will affect him/her personally throughout the life cycle. The course will include in-depth study and discussions in the areas of health as it affects people physiologically, psychologically, and sociologically. It will assist the students in evaluating their beliefs, attitudes, and values toward their own personal health in a rapidly changing environment. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits.

    This course will provide information about the relationship between nutrition and fitness/sports performance. It is of interest to professionals who advise athletes and to the general population interested in improving health and physical performance through sound nutritional practices. Topic examples include carbohydrate metabolism, weight management, body composition assessment, eating disorders, ergogenic aids, and pre-/post- and competition meals. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits.

    Students assess their current level of health-related fitness and develop a physiologically sound program of physical activity to meet their needs and interests. The course emphasizes the concept of physical fitness as a lifetime commitment and stresses the acquisition of specific knowledge, skill, and motivation necessary to meet this commitment. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits. Offered in the Fall and Spring.

    The course will provide participants with a basic knowledge of First Aid skills for treatment of illness or injury, as well as instruction in Basic Life Support for the professional rescuer (CPR). Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive certification in both Standard First Aid and CPR. May be repeated; 6 credit maximum. Prerequisite: None / 1 credit. Offered in the Fall and Spring.

    The course provides comprehensive and advanced coverage of first aid skills for treatment of illness or injury, as well as Basic Life Support/ Healthcare provider (BLS/HCO) for the professional rescuer. Upon successful completion of the course, the participants receive certification in First Responder in accordance with Massachusetts General law Chapter 111: Section 201 and Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider in accordance with the standards established by the Committee on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care of the American Heart Association. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits. Offered in the Fall and Spring.

    The course will afford students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills associated with safety, supervision and rescue in an aquatic environment. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills designed to save the life of another in an aquatic emergency. Those successfully completing the course will be certified by the American Red Cross in Lifeguard Training (R94) (including First Aid certification), CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Waterfront Lifeguarding. LGT Certification indicates the minimum skills training for a person to qualify as a non-surf lifeguard. Students must be able to pass a swimming proficiency test - completed at 2nd class meeting. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits. Offered in the Fall and Spring.
