This course emphasizes the elements essential in designing, implementing, and evaluating effective community educational programs, and prepares students with the knowledge and skills required for writing a project or program grant proposal.

Teachers explore, evaluate and effectively integrate the Internet and Web Design into instruction, including WebQuests and cyber talk. Distance learning and home-based instruction via the Internet will be explored. Correlations with NETSstandards and the Georgia Technology Standards will be emphasized. Issues and implications of computer technologies for the future will explored.

Teachers design and plan technology-connected instruction for the learning environment of the classroom. Multiple technologies will be used in the classroom including audio, visual, and video technologies; productivity software; networking and the Internet. Teachers will become proficient with technologies for use as a teacher tool for classroom presentations and as student tools for learning. Alternative assessments utilizing technology will be examined. Troubleshooting skills will be developed.

This course focuses on the characteristics and needs of individuals with mild mental impairment across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on etiology, prevention, and treatment in educational and community settings, and on physical, emotional and social characteristics of the mentally impaired. Identification, diagnosis and treatment of the mentally impaired are included. Teachers will analyze current best practices and research on mental impairments.

In this course teachers will study the meaning and concepts associated with the field of learning disabilities and the divergent characteristics of individuals with these disabilities, including the nature, causes, assessment, and treatment of learning disabilities. Teachers will analyze current best practices and research on learning difficulties.

In this course teachers will study the characteristics of socially and emotionally disturbed children to develop an understanding of the definitions, descriptive data, and various theoretical models of disturbance currently used in the literature. The emphasis is on the theories of causation, evaluation and education programs available to the emotionally disturbed. Teachers will analyze current best practices and research on emotional and behavior disorders.

In this course teachers will examine the research base for teaching students with disabilities. Teaching strategies, materials, and assistive technology will be emphasized for working with students with mental impairments, learning disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders.

Teachers will participate in a one-semester supervised practicum in the public school working with students with mental impairments, learning disabilities and emotional and behavioral disorders in the regular classroom, and in the special education programs in their schools

Teachers will use and interpret educational and psychological tests, with an emphasis on the identification and problems of measurement of exceptional learners. Attention will be given to referrals, case studies, and case conferences. Methods and techniques of assessment, diagnosis and classification of students with Mental Impairment, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Learning Disabilities and the Autistic Spectrum will be explored.

Athorough review of essential grammar skills, use of standard written English, sentence and paragraph development, and the basic expository essay. Average of 70% or better passing exit score required for exit into ENG100. Institutional credit.
