Develops an ability to understand and enjoy Western Classical music. Students study principal vocal and instrumental music in Classical form from the Baroque period to the present time. World music, jazz, rock, or other popular genres are not covered in this course. Music reading skill is not required to succeed in this class and a variety of musical backgrounds and experiences is welcome.

Introduces students to a wide variety of music from a variety of cultures and environments. Enables students to develop broader intellectual and aesthetic perspectives on music that is not from their own culture(s) and environment(s) through interactions that include listening, analyzing, and interpreting. Encourages students to consider musical factors and interactions among cultures, use appropriate and authentic sources for musical considerations, and understand interrelationships among multiple perspectives when exploring music of the world.??

Provides students with the opportunity to develop a structure for listening experiences in the Rock, Jazz, and Popular Music genres. The unique characteristics of each genre will be explored. Includes exploration of the similarities and differences within the cultures and sub-cultures from whence the genres have sprung; the borrowing from genre to genre which have taken place; and the musical integrity and structural strengths within each genre today.

Provides for the study of basic piano performance skills and techniques. Students will learn to play a variety of scales, exercises, and musical pieces on piano. Students will also become familiar with common piano nomenclature and basic music notation. No experience playing an instrument or reading music is necessary.

Combines historical, theoretical, and practical experiences necessary to provide the student with rudimentary knowledge in music education. Students will learn through performance, observation, demonstration, course readings, and classroom discussion. Some opportunities for observation and practice teaching will be provided.

Explore, develop, and practice basic skills in Music Technology utilizing audio recording, digital audio workstation, and notation computer software and audio hardware. Guided by specialized music faculty, this class uses a variety of methods and hands-on activities to provide a basic framework for Music Technology majors and an insightful overview for Performance and Music Business majors.

Focus on audio recording production, with an emphasis on running a recording session, basic signal processing and recording techniques, and advanced microphone, hardware, patchbay, and ProTools skills.

2.00 Credits
Uses the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to present a systematic approach to the pronunciation of vocal literature in Italian, Latin, and German, examining those elements of pronunciation which must be modified from the spoken language into the singing language.

Focuses on music fundamentals including notation, rhythm, key signatures, scales, intervals, triads, seventh chords, part writing and analysis. This course is designed as the first music theory course in a sequence for music majors and minors.
