    A course designed as an advanced level presentation of statistics and scientific writing for science majors. The class will consist of 2 hours of lecture/discussion and one 2-hour lab per week. It is meant to provide students with skills in statistical analysis and writing that is of a more advanced level than is presented in NSCI 190 and to prepare them for research projects in their upper level science courses. In addition, it will provide the student with research practice during their second year in science and bridge the gap in the capstone sequence between NSCI 190 and NSCI 494. Required for all second year science students. Prerequisites: NSCI 190, BIOL 130. Offered Spring Semester.

    An introduction to the techniques and methods of obtaining and analyzing samples. This is a modular course providing students with learning experiences in environmental, biological, and chemical sampling and analysis. A variety of sampling methods will be introduced as well as techniques for identifying and quantifying collected samples. Offered on demand. Laboratory fee $50.

    This course traces the development of scientific thought from its earliest beginnings in ancient history to modern times. The use of the scientific method in the development of theories will be illustrated for a variety of topics. Topics covered include atomic theory, medicine, evolution, origin of the universe, and genetic theory. The contributions to these areas from a variety of cultures including Egypt, Greco-Roman, Islam, and China, as well as the contributions of European and American scientists. Offered every other Spring semester.

    An exploration of moral, ethical, and environmental problems confronting the practice of medicine today. Topics include, but are not limited to; patient autonomy, euthanasia, abortion, allocation of resources, and environmental concerns. The various issues regarding each problem will be identified as well as identifying the various governmental and non-governmental agencies that become involved in the resolution of the problem. This course will also include a service related project. Prerequisites: NSCI 120, NSCI 190, and consent of the instructor. Offered every other Fall semester.

    This course prepares a student to complete a research proposal in science and is used to satisfy the departmental requirement of all science majors. Students should register for this course in the fall semester of their junior year. NSCI 494 must be completed before a student will be allowed to take NSCI 495. This course is awarded 1 hour of credit. Students taking this course will consult with a faculty research mentor on the project prior to their proposal. This course along with NSCI 495, 496, and 497 represents the capstone learning experience for the sciences. Offered Fall semester.

    The independent investigation of a topic in science. Used to satisfy the departmental research requirement of all science majors. Students must complete NSCI 495 before enrolling in NSCI 496. Registration for NSCI 496 requires the signature of the individual in charge of the NSCI 496 learning experience and cannot be completed on-line. This research experience allows the student to receive credit for conducting their research. Students taking this course will work with a faculty research mentor and will complete a formal research paper upon completion of the project. The completed research papers will be published on the school's web page. This course, along with NSCI 494, 496, and 497 represents the capstone learning experience for the sciences. Offered Spring semester.

    The presentation of a seminar about a student's research experience. This course is taken during the spring semester of a students' senior year. Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in communicating their research project orally to an audience, using electronic presentation software. This course, along with NSCI 494, 495, and 497 represents the capstone learning experience for the sciences. Offered each spring semester. Students are not permitted to take NSCI 496 until they have achieved a minimum grade of "C" in NSCI 49

    This course is the compilation of a portfolio about a students' capstone experience. It is taken during the spring semester of a students' senior year, concurrently with NSCI 496. This part of the capstone experience requires students to demonstrate proficiency in compiling a record of their experience in each of the sections that make up the capstone experience. Offered Spring semester.
  • 1.00 - 3.00 Credits

    This course is designed to be an in depth study of a topic of interest from a previous class or an area of special interest in the sciences. A study plan must be prepared prior to enrolling and a faculty supervisor must be willing to work with the student on the project. Not intended to substitute for NSCI 495. Offered Every semester.

    This course provides opportunity for the Licensed Practical Nurse to acquire didactic content and skills needed for entry into NURS 208. Concepts related to role transition and professional socialization are emphasized. Prerequisites: PSYC 212, BIOL 251/ 251L, BIOL 252/ 252L, HSCI 204, HSCI 307. Co-requisite: HSCI 103.
