ESL 016: Esl Speaking And Listening Level 1

Literacy Speaking and Listening is designed to meet the needs of pre- and non-literate students and false beginners who lack basic spoken English skills. The general goals of the course are that students gain the basic skills of listening to follow instructions in class; learning basic phonics and pronunciation of English sounds; beginning to speak and listen for greetings, small talk and personal information; and gaining confidence to engage in conversation in English. Course goals are chosen from the mandated Level 1 Washington State Core Competencies for reading and writing. The state competencies are expanded upon in order to clarify student needs and curriculum goals for this course.

ESL 037: Beginning Computer Assisted Language Learning

An ESL class designed to meet the needs of students from all levels and abilities. Students meet with the teacher to determine what particular programs they need to work on. Students work out an individualized program, which could include computer software in grammar, reading, writing, computation, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary building as well as audio programs on listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary building. In addition, students may choose to learn keyboarding or word-processing. Students who are working on writing assignments in other classes may use this time to consult with the teacher on their writing assignments. This work will enable them to work on editing their written compositions. Finally, students are encouraged to attempt some web-based research projects.
