Literacy Speaking and Listening is designed to meet the needs of pre- and non-literate students and false beginners who lack basic spoken English skills. The general goals of the course are that students gain the basic skills of listening to follow instructions in class; learning basic phonics and pronunciation of English sounds; beginning to speak and listen for greetings, small talk and personal information; and gaining confidence to engage in conversation in English. Course goals are chosen from the mandated Level 1 Washington State Core Competencies for reading and writing. The state competencies are expanded upon in order to clarify student needs and curriculum goals for this course.
