    This course provides an orientation to the professional practice and science of clinical psychology. History, major theoretical orientations, and scientific underpinnings of clinical psychology are explored as well as current developments in practice and research. Topics include the continued development of clinical psychology as a separate profession, clinically-related research, treatment efficacy, specialized training, and orientations to the major activities of clinical psychologists: psychotherapy, assessment, and clinical research. Ethical principles for psychologists are strongly emphasized. Prerequisites: PSYC1010, PSYC2800, PSYC3550, PSYC3580, PSYC3700, 75 Credits, and Department Head Permission

Topics include definitions and the history of counseling and psychotherapy, settings for professional practice, professional development, contemporary issues and ethics, as well as models of counseling and psychotherapy and their associated techniques. Prerequisites: PSYC3580, PSYC3700, PSYC3755, 60 credits, and Department Head Permission

    This coursse provides an introduction to the effects of psychoactive drugs. Attention is provided to essentials of psychopharmacology, classification of drugs, and how drug properties interact with characteristics of drug users to yield their effects. This course is designed as a foundational course for those interested in learning more about drugs and addictions counseling. Prerequisites: PSYC1010 and 60 credits

    This course is the application of psychology in the legal system. In the course, students will: survey the history and scope of forensic psychology; examine the use of psychology in civil and criminal proceedings, including evaluation of competency and insanity; prepare expert witness testimony and forensic reports; discuss psychological impact on victims; and address the practice of psychology in correctional facilities and other interventions and treatment of offenders. Prerequisite: PSYC1010

    This course provides Applied Psychology majors with an elective that explores the psychological issues that affect athletes and coaches at various levels. Students will learn about topics such as motivation, goal setting, mental training, and communication and how to apply this knowledge in a real-world setting. The course will also be an elective that is available to the students throughout the university as an elective. Pre-requisite: PSYC1010

    The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the psychological and motivational factors associated with exercise participation and health behavior changes. This course offers an overview of the major topics in health and exercise psychology and explores individual, social, and environmental influences on physical and mental health. Topics of interest include exercise adherence, health behavior changes such as increasing physical activity and improving diet, the influence of stress on health, and the treatment of chronic disease and mental illness through physical activity and exercise. Prerequisite: PSYC1010

    Under the guidance of a social sciences faculty member, the student will complete 40 hours of documented experience on a research project or an internship at a department-approved site. The student's experience may be a volunteer or paid position that is directly related to the field of applied psychology. Participation in professional activities allows students to experience the work environment in their chosen field, make informed career choices, and enhance their employment credentials. These experiences reinforce the connection between professional and liberal learning through the application of classroom theories to actual occupational problems. This course requires 40 hours on site, as well as the completion of the academic requirements established by the Department of Social Sciences. Prerequisites: 90 credits and permission of the Department head
