This course is designed to introduce the student to the microscopic study of the normal structures of the body. Emphasis is placed on the development of the oral and facial regions including properties of the oral mucosa and characteristics of dental tissues as they relate to other tissues of the body. The practical application of this information is stressed. Co-requisites: BIO 103, DE 131.

This course is designed to survey the basic information regarding the dental specialty of periodontics. Through reading assignments and class activities, the student will become familiar with the differences between normal and diseased periodontium and the dynamics of the unique disease process that concerns the periodontium. Prerequisites: BIO 103, DH 170. Co-requisites: DH 101, BIO 205

This course is designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge required to understand and suspect the presence of systemic disease in a dental patient and to recognize changes in the oral cavity. Emphasis is placed on etiology with clinical appearance and differentiation of lesions. Prerequisites: BIO 103, BIO 104, DH 110 and 111. Co-requisites: DH 201 and 202.

This course will provide the student with the opportunity to integrate didactic material so it can be applied to clinical dental hygiene practice. Emphasis is placed on nutritional counseling, pedodontic management, hypersensitivity, denture care, smoke cessation, pedodontic management and dental hygiene research. Prerequisites: DH 110, 111, 180 Co-requisites: BIO 210, DH 142, 190, 202.

This is the third in a series of four semesters of clinical dental hygiene practice. Emphasis is placed on treatment planning and treatment of a variety of patient case types. Prerequisites: DH 110, 111, 180 Co-requisites: BIO 210, DH 201, 270, 280.

1.00 Credits
This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and hands-on laboratory experience to perform local anesthesia injections in the dental hygiene clinical setting. The course will provide the student with the required didactic and laboratory knowledge to apply for the permit to administer anesthesia as part of the dental hygiene licensure in the state of Pennsylvania. Student must achieve a C (75%) in course.Prerequisites: DH 200, DH 110, DH 111; Corequisites: DH 201, DH 202.

Emphasis will be placed on the special needs of patients who are medically compromised. We also will examine the needs of geriatric, sensory-impaired, pregnant, and disabled dental patients. A variety of dental specialties will be discussed. This seminar will develop further skills in patient management and dental hygiene treatment planning in a clinic setting. Prerequisites: BIO 210, DH 201, 202, 270, 280. Co-requisite: DH 211.

This course is the fourth and final in a series of four seminars on clinical dental hygiene practice. Emphasis is placed on advanced dental hygiene procedures. Prerequisites: BIO 210, DH 201, 202, 270, 280. Co-requisite: DH 210.

This course is designed to give the student knowledge in the basic principles of pharmacology and the drugs used in the current therapy of disease states. Special emphasis is given to those drugs administered or prescribed in the practice of dentistry and also to those drugs whose actions, side effects, or interactions with other drugs are of particular importance to dental medicine. Prerequisites: BIO 103 and 104, DE 131, DH 110 and 111.

2.00 Credits
This course is designed to introduce the student to the principles of public health and community dentistry. Students will participate in community fieldwork during the course. The fieldwork will incorporate dental health education program plans that will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate programs for both grade schools and community agencies. Prerequisites: DH 201 and 202.
