This course provides an intensive, in-depth study and analysis of contemporary Spanish syntax and a comprehensive overview of advanced grammar. Student develop an idiomatic writing style as a result of a better understanding and application of the complex grammatical structures presented. Topics include the articulation of a coherent positon on a given topic, the development of argumentation skills, and the inclusion of appropriate documentation and references to support conclusions. Class discussions are conducted entirely in Spanish. Prerequisites: SPA 203 and 204 or approval of the department chair . Course is required of all Spanish majors. Offered upon sufficent enrollment. 3 credits.

Students are expected to carry much of the discussion and demonstrate an understanding of laws and policies regarding referral and placement for students with disabilities. The professor's role will be to facilitate and at times, initiate discussion. The syllabus is extensive. Emphasis is placed on assessment and remediation techniques for school-aged populations in the areas of reading and language development. Students learn to plan, teach, and remediate learning problems of diverse populations while providing appropriate social and emotional support using appropriate multimedia technology. IEP development, lesson planning for inclusion, and overall achievement testing are addressed. Students participate in assessment and remediation methods in all curriculum areas. Fee. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the need for and development of a signed/manual language system. The class will examine the historical perspective of medical, educational, legal and societal influences on the continuum of approaches used to facilitate manual/gestural communication with the hearing-impaired populations. It will relate this information to the contemporary struggles the Deaf face regarding intellectual, social and economic forces that impact their acceptance within the mainstream of society. The course participants will gain a sensitive perspective toward the emotional, psychological and cultural needs of this exceptional population as well as survival language/signing skills that will enable them to communicate basic needs with the Deaf. Through the class sessions, texts, field trips, films, and guest speakers, the students will master the course outcomes; they will have a signing vocabulary of more than 200 words and, based on "Pidgin Sign English" (PSE), will communicate in sentences, describe events and tell/understand simple stories.
