    This course is an introduction to the repertoire and technical challenges of the classical guitar. Emphasis will be placed on proper right and left hand technique. The study of the Segovia scales, Giuliani arpeggios, Carcassi etudes, and Andrew York¿s Seven Discernments will give a basic introduction to tone production, interpretation, and repertoire building. This course is designed to be played on a traditional nylon string classical guitar (supplied by student). Prerequisites: MUS 125 and MUS 126 or permission of instructor.

    This course is an introduction to the basics of jazz guitar. Chord/scale relationships, drop two chordal inversions, navigating changes, analysis of songs, awareness of major figures in the idiom, developing efficient practice habits, and improvisational vocabulary will be explored. Prerequisites: MUS 125 and MUS 126 or permission of instructor.

    This course will explore the basics of funk guitar. Emphasis will be placed on the playing styles of New Orleans funk, the music of James Brown, and the music of funk/rock groups. Analysis of playing styles, the role of the guitar in a funk group, and improvisational concepts both chordal and single note ideas will be explored. Prerequisites: MUS 125 and MUS 126 or permission of instructor.

    A continuation of MUS 135 Jazz Ensemble II. An instrumental ensemble that performs stage band literature from the 1920¿s to the present. Students learn the basics of several Jazz styles, techniques, phrasing, and articulations. Students provide their own instruments. The ensemble is open to non-music majors and music majors. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semester.) Prerequisite: MUS 135 Meets SUNY General Education requirement for The Arts (AR)

    A continuation of MUS 236, Jazz Ensemble III. An instrumental ensemble that performs stage band literature from the 1920¿s to the present. Students learn the basics of several Jazz styles, techniques, phrasing, and articulations. Students provide their own instruments. The ensemble is open to non-music majors and music majors. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.) Prerequisite: MUS 236 Meets SUNY General Education requirement for The Arts (AR)

    A vocal ensemble devoted to performing choral literature. This ensemble will focus on choral styles, vocal production, choreography, creative movement, and will perform several times each semester on and off campus. Audition required. Students must be able to meet the physical demands of active performance. (Usually offered Fall and Spring semesters.) Prerequisite: MUS 139 Meets SUNY General Education requirement for The Arts (AR)

    A continuation of Rock Ensemble I (MUS147). Students will learn concepts, and methodologies necessary to manage all aspects of participating in a Rock band. Instruction emphasizes exploration of various forms of musical expression in an effort to develop the band's voice and style. Students will also be introduced to the principles and practices of creative production and be shown opportunities to study performance, sound design, and music production. In addition, the student will develop sufficient resources to enable him/her to work effectively with others through the preparation and presentation of a final project. (Usually meets Fall and Spring semesters.) Prerequisite: MUS 147 Students must provide own instruments.
