    2 credits This course focuses on the philosophy, objectives and conceptual framework of the nursing program. Students are introduced to the scope of practice of the LPN. Teachinglearning, nurse patient relationship and communication are introduced. The steps of the nursing process, growth and development and cultural values are also discussed. Case studies are used to provide background information to enhance the student's understanding of nursing. At the end of the course, the student will be able to describe and explain the scope of practice for the LPN. Legal and ethical issues and explored.

    3 credits The student learns the basic terminology, abbreviations and units needed to perform pharmaceutical calculations. Apothecary, avoirdupois, and metric systems are an essential component of this course. Conversion between the systems, application of formulas, calculations of fractional dosages, and methods of calculating dosages from all drug forms. Review of calculations dealing with ratio and proportion, percentages, ratio strength, reducing and enlarging formulas, and dilution and concentration problems. Interpretation of prescriptions and orders and subsequent calculation of appropriate doses.

    4 credits This course prepares the students to perform the psychomotor skills required for nursing practice. Prior to implementation in the clinical setting, students must have the opportunity to understand and gain proficiency in the college laboratory setting.

    4 credits, 3 lecture hours, 3 lab hours This is the first course of the Anatomy and Physiology sequence. The course focuses on major biological theories. Topics covered include body organization, chemistry of life and cellular functioning. Gross and microscopic anatomy and physiology of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems are discussed. Each student is responsible for the dissection of a sheep brain as well as extensive laboratory exercises involving microscope work, experimental procedures, and mastery of models, charts, and computer programs in anatomy and physiology. Course is required for the Practical Nurse certificate program.

    4 credits, 3 lecture hours, 3 lab hours This course is the continuation of Human Anatomy and Physiology I. The course focuses on the gross and microscopic structure and function of the sense organs, endocrine system, blood and cardiovascular systems, lymphatic and immune systems, and the respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive systems. The laboratory portion of the course focuses on practical applications of the lecture material including a number of diagnostic and laboratory tests and procedures. Students are responsible for the dissection of numerous preserved specimens. Course is required for the Practical Nurse certificate program. PREREQUISITE: NS-111

    4 credits, 3 lecture hours, 3 lab hours This course explores the world of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protistans and other microbes. Immunology is also studied. Emphasis is placed on the nature and behavior of these organisms and their interrelationship with the human body in health and disease. The principles of prevention and control of infectious diseases are presented. Laboratory exercises develop techniques in the preparation, handling, and identification of a variety of microbial cultures. Course is required for the Practical Nurse certificate program.     6 credits Part I of this course concentrates on the needs of the patients in a variety of health care settings where direct nursing care is provided. Course content is applied to both simulated and actual patient situations. This is the first nursing practice experience where theoretical content in prior courses is integrated with the application of basic nursing care concepts. The second component focuses on bio-psychosocial models as a perspective for viewing health promotion of persons and groups experiencing vulnerabilities and alterations in mental health across the lifespan. The nursing process is applied to individuals and groups in acute care mental health settings. PREREQUISITE: NS-101, NS-105, NS-110, NS-111, EN-109

    6 credits The course has two components; interactions with the child bearing/ rearing family during pregnancy, labor, delivery, the puerperium and the care of the infant through adolescence. Topics for discussion in each component include social issues that lead to the disintegration of the family as a unit. Clinical learning experience will take place in a variety of settings.     7 credits The course stresses the basic concepts of care for patients with acute and/or long term health problems. Students will be expected to spend extensive time in the laboratory practicing skills and reviewing software as needed.     7 credits The student will learn communication and other skills to work with patients and significant others of normal and altered mental status. Using the nursing process to assess, analyze and plan care to meet the needs of the adults though the life span. The nursing focus is on the care of the adolescents, adults and the aged. Aspects of the psychosocial care are interwoven. Alterations in psychosocial development and relevant nursing interventions are analyzed with emphasis on self-understanding and use of self as a therapeutic tool. Complete assessment, physical and psychosocial of adults is emphasized. The approach to patient care will reflect the student's ability to implement care based on the significance of ethical/legal issues, culture, ethnicity and how one adapts to the community. All appropriate assessment validation of information and development of nursing diagnosis implementation and evaluation will be initiated. PREREQUISITE: Certificate College Credit Bearing L.P.N.
