3 credits This is a fascinating course dealing with business combinations. A little history and many new terms will be introduced to help the student get a perspective of the role of business combinations in our current business climate. The terms statutory merger, stock acquisition, and statutory consolidation are differentiated. The historical perspective includes horizontal integration, vertical integration, and merger mania. The course considers why and how firms merge, the effects on capital structure, stock prices and market share. Topics include friendly mergers, unfriendly (hostile) mergers, tender offer, poison pill, greenmail, white knight, pac-man defense, selling the crown jewels, and leveraged buyout. 3 credits This introductory course emphasizes the basic skills of reading, writing, and speaking French as well as translating text from French to English. Students will demonstrate their language skills by preparing brief compositions and reading appropriate texts.

3 credits The health industry involves a battery of practitioners, with an elaborate network of specialized knowledge, rapidly advancing technologies, techniques, therapies, and management diverse in their organization and modes of delivery. This course provides a general overview of the United States health care industry, its policy makers, values and priorities. Major influences in the continuing growth and change of the American health care delivery system are examined, along with the important legislative, political and economic factors. The effects of medical education, scientific advances, rising costs, changing population demographics, and American values and assumptions regarding health care are also addressed.

3 credits This course develops an understanding of management methods used in today's medical office, proficiency in creating medical communications, and integrates concepts of modern technology in communications, preparation of financial data, personnel data, and records management. The course emphasizes methods for ensuring office management through monitoring and coordination of all office components including those related to administration of people, procedures, equipment and environment, budgeting, time, and supplies, adherence to statutory regulations concerning the conduct of a medical office. The key players in the front and back office will be discussed. PREREQUISITE: HA-101 or HA-106

This course will increase student knowledge about basic health information, the wellness concept, healthy lifestyle choices and accepting personal responsibility for achieving optimal health. Areas of emphasis include controlling stress, mental health, nutrition, substance use and abuse, infectious and noninfectious diseases, environmental and consumer health issues. PREREQUISITES: None

3 credits This course provides an introduction to key issues affecting women's health in the United States with a special emphasis on cultural values, health care in minority populations, disease prevention, and consumer health concerns. This course concentrates on the coding of diseases, operative procedures, and abstracting clinical diagnostic data from medical information. PREREQUISITE: HC-125 or HC-126

4 credits, 4 lecture hours This comprehensive, three-part course provides the student with an overview of the historical development of medical nomenclature and classification systems introducing the coding of the diseases, medical conditions, and operative procedures, both in the in-patient and outpatient setting to the highest level of specificity. In addition, the student will learn to research and apply knowledge of insurance rules and regulations for major insurance programs, office bookkeeping system, accurately post charges, payments, and adjustments to patient accounts. The student will review all insurance payments and explanation of benefits forms and perform patient scheduling using the Medical Office Manager Software. PREREQUISITES: HC-126
