Introduces the student to the physical, psychological, socioeconomic, and cultural aspects of aging and their relationship to occupational performance of older adults. The focus is on providing care to individuals experiencing common aging disorders and uses the occupational therapy process of evaluation, treatment planning, implementation, and community programming. Issues of wellness and preventive care for the well elderly will also be addressed. 2 credit hours. 24 hours of Level I Fieldwork experience. Prerequisite: OTA 1520. J fall

Introduces students to the care of clients with psychiatric and neurobehavioral disorders and addresses role dysfunction, competence assessment, and prevention, as well as assessment and intervention techniques. Emphasis is placed on learning to provide care using the occupational therapy process of evaluation, treatment planning, implementation, and documentation of care. Course information will be introduced through the use of lecture, case studies, small group discussions, field trips, and visits to area facilities. 2 credit hours. Prerequisites: OTA 1510, OTA 1520. This is the second course in a series of three that will each emphasize one of the three areas of occupation: self-care, work, and leisure. Students will apply the concepts of activity and occupation as they relate to leisure across the lifespan. Students will develop a further understanding of activity analysis and therapeutic adaptation while incorporating the OT process into their learning. Builds on previous knowledge about human occupations to develop the student's knowledge and skills in the use of occupational groups in therapy with individuals of various ages and disabilities. Exposure to normal groups, group characteristics, structure, planning, leadership, and the evaluation of groups in occupational therapy is emphasized. 2 credit hours. Prerequisite: OTA 1510. J spring

Students will learn the major developmental disabilities across the lifespan. Theories of human development and occupation will be reviewed for students to understand the acquisition of functional skills and social roles. Occupational assessments are explored and relevant treatment techniques will be reviewed. Delivery models emphasizing naturalized environments and family centered models will be discussed. Level I fieldwork offers direct experience in the practice setting. Through observation and participation, students will begin to assimilate academic coursework, creating an opportunity for professional growth and development. This course allows students to observe clients in actual treatment environments, to interact with individuals involved in various programs, to share the appreciation of occupations with other professionals, and to experience direct contact with individuals involved in various service delivery systems. Observation and participation in a pediatric and/or mental health community setting will be the focus of this fieldwork experience. 1 credit hour. Corequisites: OTA 1620 and OTA 2610. J spring
