Students will examine and evaluate the world at war with emphasis on the role of the United States from the battlefields to the homefront. Multiple factors of the aftermath of World War I, the rise of fascism, Japan's expansion in Asia, the alliance of Britain, America, and the USSR, and the strategies of each side in the war are studied. Implications of the surrender of Germany and Japan, including some from the humanities. Particularly appropriate for those currently in leadership positions or those wishing to gain skills for leadership roles. 3 credit hours. This interdisciplinary course examines the development and variety of religious belief in the past and present. Historical, pre-historic, and non-literary traditions are examined, include Native American, African, Asian, Indo-European, and Semitic beliefs. Special consideration is given to religious development, assimilation, diffusion, practices, and phenomena. Student(s) will engage in archival research on the Progressive Era (1890 - 1920) in local history by organizing, researching, interpreting, and communicating their understanding of this era through the use of the Jamestown YMCA's original records. They will organize, work to preserve, and utilize these primary sources; including newspaper, photographic, and institutional records. This may include placing records in acid-free folders and boxes, shelving items in chronological order, and scanning evidence through standard archival methods.

This course will explore the modern history and politics of the Middle East (1798-2006) which are having such profound consequences for the United States, the Middle East and the world today. It is hoped that this course will shed light on the divide between the West and Islamic societies today with the hope of overcoming that divide and promoting understanding and peace in the world. Among the topics to be studied are: cultural and historical background of the Middle East, perceptions of the Middle East in the West and perceptions of the West in the Middle East, the Western impact since 1798 and the Middle Eastern response, World War I - II and aftermath, origins of the current conflict between Israel and Palestine, the search for true Arab independence, revolution, traditional Islam and modernizing Islam, new realities, Iraq, the United States foreign policy in the Middle East and current realities, and options to promote peace and stability in the region.
