Discharge planning assists patients and their families in arranging appropriate health care services. The course will review the historical development and current demand for discharge planners, particularly in New York State, as well as techniques and resources in the planning of ambulatory, acute and long-term care, and new alternative health services for the individual patient. The methodology for the course will include guest speakers, on-site visits to institutions, and case studies. This course is intended for social workers, health counselors, nurses, patient care representatives, quality assurance and utilization review coordinators, and the general public interested in the options available for health care. This guided independent study course focuses on the adult years as a complex and extraordinarily variable process, rather than as an orderly sequence of predictable stages. A multidisciplinary approach is used to incorporate the various perspectives of current research. The course begins with a historical overview, and is then organized in concentric circles beginning with the individual's experience with self. A study of interpersonal relations within the family comes next and is followed by a consideration of the larger social context and the adult's experience as worker and learner. Course content centers on experiments in psychophysics, attention, learning and perception. Not open to students who have taken PSY 4120. A field experience in which students integrate counseling theory with practice in health counseling under faculty supervision. Students must notify the Director of Health Counseling or the department chair one semester before registering for this course. Same course as HEC 4100. 4 credits. N

A study of the foundations of modern social psychology, the individual in society, social interaction and social processes; the nature and characteristics of social groupings; social change and stability; attitudinal development and change; practical applications as found in current research on group influences and reactions in experimental and natural settings. A laboratory course directed toward training the student in experimental method; emphasis on research techniques and statement of problems; methodology; statistical treatment and interpretation of results. Consideration of clinical and experimental evidence supporting the major theories of distorted behavior and related therapeutic approaches. Not open to students who have taken PSY 461. An advanced course utilizing a case approach, as well as knowledge acquired in previous courses, in the exploration and examination of special health counseling issues. This guided independent study course provides a detailed exploration of social behavior and experience. Among the topics treated in the course are: communication and language; the formation of attitudes; social interaction; moral development; group dynamics; socialization; and the development of the self concept. The goal of the course is to describe specific social processes that influence thought and motivate human behavior. Permission required. 9 credits. N
