This course will provide the requisite knowledge of applied anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, medical interventions and procedures in order to provide a foundation for upper division medical records coding studies. Co-requisite or prerequisite: NSC 2400. 4 credits FT

This course covers the purpose and the use of the ICD-9-CM classification system. Topics include coding conventions, coding principles, and CMS official coding guidelines (inpatient and outpatient). Students will be required to assign ICD-9-CM codes to diagnosis/procedure statements, case abstracts, and patient records. Use of the ICD-9-CM coding manual and a computerized encoder is also incorporated. In addition, inpatient, outpatient, and physician office reimbursement systems are covered. This course is a comprehensive study of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and HCPCS. Topics include understanding what the CPT nomenclature is, how and why it is used, and guidelines for each code category and how it is applied to represent services within each code category. Coding for evaluation and management of anesthesia, surgery, pathology, laboratory, radiology and medicine will be emphasized. Prerequisites: NSC 2400, HCA 1102, HCA 1103. 4 credits. ST

The administration of health services is the most complicated management task in our society. This course examines general management and organization theory and applies this knowledge to the administration of health care organizations. Throughout the course, conceptual learning is combined with behavioral practice for the development of effective health management skills. 4 credits. F

An introduction to management principles for health care organizations, including activities of boards of directors in health agencies and systems, and mechanisms for measurement, assessment and continuous quality improvement in health care settings. A case study approach and team presentations are emphasized. 4 credits. N

This course will provide a conceptual and practical knowledge of health care finance including sources of funding operations, the interrelationship between department and total facility budget, the accounting and reporting process, and the influence of third parties on revenue and cost of health care.
