This course covers the purpose and the use of the ICD-9-CM classification system. Topics include coding conventions, coding principles, and CMS official coding guidelines (inpatient and outpatient). Students will be required to assign ICD-9-CM codes to diagnosis/procedure statements, case abstracts, and patient records. Use of the ICD-9-CM coding manual and a computerized encoder is also incorporated. In addition, inpatient, outpatient, and physician office reimbursement systems are covered. Prerequisites: NSC 2400, HCA 1102. 4 credits. WT
