The study of the social welfare matrix, beginning with a historical perspective and tracing social service development to present-day systems, as well as the history of the social work profession. Focuses on means through which the individual, family and community problems and/or needs are identified, referred to and met by the social welfare system. Emphasis on foundation of professional values and ethics. Lectures in conjunction with 40 hours of volunteer service. Prerequisites: SO101, HI131 may be taken concurrently. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits.

This course examines addiction from a systems perspective, making it particularly appropriate to the "person-in-environment" approach. It will examine the major theories of addiction, as well as the major biological, psychological, and social results of addictions, including co-occuring disorders. Content and discussions of the latest developments in treatment and research will incorporate the most recent findings on genetic causes of alcoholism. Recent trends in designer drugs will be included to help explain the considerable frequency of changes in which drug use patterns occur. The aspect of race, culture, ethnicity, gender and age and the role these play in defining and identifying addiction and its treatment interventions will be included. Excessive gambling, excessive exercise, and excessive spending will also be discussed as a form of addiction using theoretical applications. 3 hours lecture, one semester, 3 credits.

An analysis of marriage and family life is presented. The course concentrates on American society but integrates comparative systems where relevant. Areas included are conventional and radical approaches to family life, sexuality, dissolution, and marriage and family life in the middle and later years of life. Contemporary problems and approaches will be discussed. Pre- or corequisites: SO101 or permission of instructor. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits. Offered each semester.

This course explores the history of majority/minority group dynamics in the United States. There will be an emphasis on how minority group members are arranged along the various dimensions of the social structure and how these groups differ in their life chances. Focus will be on race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, mental health and the resulting social stratification. 3 hour lecture, one semester; 3 credits.

Comprehensive social work-focused introduction to child abuse and neglect; the identification of child maltreatment and domestic violence is necessary for all social workers but especially for those who will work in child protective services. Family dynamics, an introduction to interventions, child welfare history, child welfare competencies, and multiculturalism and social policy isssues will be covered. Prerequisite: SW203, 2 hours lecture, one semester. 3 credits.
