A historical approach to the countires and cultures of Latin America. A detailed, chonological study of Latin American countries from the great indigenous cultures to present-day. Emphasis on the history, economics, politics, arts, and ideologies that have shaped each country's unique identity. Prerequisites: SP221 or SP222 and SP345 or SP346; or SP418

An introduction to literary movements and literary analysis from indigenous works to contemporary literature. Emphasis on the application of technical terms to analyze short stories, poetry, essays, novels, and theatrical works. Prerequisite: SP221 or SP222 and SP345 or SP346; or SP418 or SP419 or equivalent or with permission of the instructor. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits. Offered fall 2009 and alternate fall semesters.

In this course, students study texts, literary movements and the authors' literary strategies and techniques. Students will learn the concepts and technical vocabular (in Spanish) necessary to analyze the different genres of narrative/short story, poetry, drama, and novel using an appropriate literary discourse.

Focus on analyzing and interpreting literary texts to understand narrative strategies through reading, writing and thinking critically. Special emphasis on the writing process in order to aid the students' development of a clear, concise and focused writing style. Several authors will be read, including: Borges, Rulfo, Cortázar, Garcia Márquez,Allende, Fuentes and Esquivel. Prerequisite: SP425 or permission of the instructor. 3 hours lecture, one semester; 3 credits. Offered spring 2010 and alternate spring semesters.
