ART 137: Faux Finish I

This is an introductory course that is part of the Faux Painting and Decorative Painting Certificate programs. Students will learn techniques for creating a variety of finishes: traditional glazing techniques with two or three blended colors, embedded finishes and dimensional stone and weathered finishes. All steps are demonstrated and practiced, from surface preparation to color mixing to final protective coatings. This course builds on what was mastered in Faux Finish I. Students will explore an advanced level of finishes utilizing inter-layered textures and multi-layered techniques. Students will also learn some basic furniture finishes and design and create their own floor cloth or folding screen. All steps are demonstrated and practiced, from surface preparation to color mixing to final protective coatings. Students leave the course with professional sample boards, a hand-painted piece of furniture or floor cloth that they can use as models for further work or as samples for potential clients and employers. This course builds on what was mastered in Faux Finish I or Painting I. Students will apply their knowledge of paint finishes and painting to design and create a mural for a non-profit organization. The student will assist the instructor with organizing and planning the project and take a leadership role in working with the Art Co-op students. Students will leave the course with professional sample boards, preliminary sketches, a written proposal, and photographs of the project and samples of other work completed in Faux I/II or Painting I.
