This course is appropriate for majors and individuals with language experience overseas. The year long sequence helps students become functional speakers, readers, and writers of modern Chinese through articles and essays from newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, as well as engagement with popular media and online communications. Prerequisite: successful completion of four years of Chinese language training, as determined by placement examination. The learning goals of the course are to introduce modern Chinese culture while developing competence in reading, speaking and writing standard modern Chinese.

The emphasis of this course is on enhancing students' skills of developing speeches or writing essays on sophisticated topics. Students at this level are expected to express themselves not only fluently and accurately, but also literally and artistically. Depending on enrollment, this course may be structured to the individual needs of students.Through the course, students will reach the advanced-high level in listening and speaking, advanced-mid level in reading, and advanced-low level in writing, based on the ACTFL standard. Students will become familiar with extended discourse on concrete topics and gain ability to deal with abstract or professional, specialized topics, and to defend opinions.

In class, we will be discussing and analyzing various topics in society and daily life. In particular, students should acquire the ability to systematically and thoroughly express their opinions. Through study of the textbook, students should improve their understanding of Chinese society and culture and hence more effectively establish and foster relationships with local Chinese people.

To help students progress from intermediate level to advanced level of Chinese. Solidify and advance students' grasp of the grammar and vocabulary in the course materials, expand the size of vocabulary, give students the ability to read essays at a deeper level and infer meaning from different areas, and gain the ability to naturally write Chinese at various levels of formality without grammar mistakes.
