ARHI 34541: Great Age of Art and Architecture in Paris (1789 to 1914)

This course is site-specific to Paris. It will begin with a tour of architecture and public monuments and concentrate on the major museums. The first is the Louvre, which is vast. There will be an introduction to its history and to the history of art that it contains. The most important wing, Denon, will be visited and the paintings of Leonardo and sculptures of Michelangelo will provide background. We will focus upon the Neo-Classical works of David during the French Revolution and the Romantic paintings of Gericault and Delacroix in the 19th century. Students will be given a free day for personal exploration of this major artistic capital city. Students will be encouraged to visit the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, the Eiffel Tower, and Montmartre. There will be a group visit to the Musee d'Orsay. We will look at the Realism of Millet and Courbet, and the art of Manet. We will also study the Post-Impressionists, including Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Seurat. We will focus on the graphic work of Toulouse-Lautrec, the sculpture of Rodin, and architectural modes of Paris between 1830 and 1914.

This course will introduce the main themes of Victorian art. We will investigate the relations between art and society in 19th-century London, explore artistic neighborhoods and lifestyles, and consider how artists approached subjects such as life and death, love and sexuality, work and leisure, urban living and city streets. After an initial briefing session at Suffolk Street, the classes will be given in major London museums so that you can learn about Victorian art and architecture by actually looking at it and walking round it. We will visit the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, Tate Britain at Millbank, the Museum of London at the Barbican and/or Leighton House, the magnificent artist's residence built in an Oriental style in West London. On each visit, the course tutor will provide an introduction, give expert guidance on looking and interpreting, and lead the discussion and question time.

In studying Australian film, students will examine both historical and contemporary films with an emphasis on their expression of history and culture and how they reflect Australian society. Australian plays from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day will be examined within a cultural and dramatic context. Texts will be selected to illustrate Australian themes as well as for differing dramatic styles. They will be explored from both a literary and performance perspective.
