    Focus is on three major wars the Americans fought in Asia in the last century: the Pacific War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The course will examine the causes and the consequences of these wars within broader domestic, international, cultural, and historic contexts. It will carefully investigate the imprint the wars left on the peoples of the United States and Asia and will explore the human and cultural dimensions of the wars as an experience. Students will be introduced not only to American but also to Asian views of these wars, which are in conflict. Students are expected and strongly encouraged to challenge theexisting views and interpretations of the events. Prerequisite: 100-level history course or instructor's permission. 4 SH.

    A cross-cultural, interdisciplinary perspective of Asia from the Ancient and Classical period to the 16th century through its religions, arts and literature. Includes the teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Shinto. Covers characteristics and styles of selective Chinese and Japanese painting and art, and nuance of Asian literature will be considered within an historical, social, and cultural context, tracing the intertwined character of religious thought, sentiment, and artistic expression in China and Japan. Prerequisites: 100-level history course or instructor's permission. 4 SH.

    An overview of continuities and discontinuities of the family pattern and the gender roles in Asian nations, mainly China and Japan, from the pre-modern time to the present. The course will use historical events and personal stories, scholarly and fictional writings, and films to trace the feminist movements and major developments of gender consciousness, relationships, and the family structure in Asian history. Students will fully explore the way in which class, society, and history create different life possibilities for women and, in turn, how the changing gender relations and family patterns affected society, history, and individuals. Same as WMST:355. Prerequisite: 100-level history course or instructor's permission 4 SH.

    Discussion, debate and evaluation of significant problems or phenomena in history. Topics vary according to instructor preference. Recent topics include: Film and History, African Diaspora, Intellectual History of Europe, Islam in Africa, and Indian Ocean History. Prerequisite: completion of at least one history course or instructor's permission. 4 SH.

    A summer study tour of China, during which students will become acquainted with the historical legacy, traditional culture, social changes, economic development, modern lifestyle, and current politics of China through readings, lectures, discussions, coursework, and educational exchanges, as well as "hands/feet-on" experiences. The course aims to expose students to the living world of the largest non-Western civilization and the other side of the world. The tour itself is a chance for students to learn how to respect, tolerate, and collaborate with the "other" and to act with other tour members like a family, united to meet challenges from a foreign environment. Students will participate in various activities, such as watching shows, learning Chinese sports, attending lectures by Chinese professors, exchanging opinions and information with Chinese students, meeting Chinese people, and visiting historical sites, museums, gardens, companies, manufactories, markets, living compounds, Chinese families, and local universities. Everyone in this course is expected to become a Chinese during the trip, in order to truly learn the Chinese perspective, thinking, and li fe. 2 SH

    Collective work that bridges the courses "History Methods" and "Senior Seminar" and helps students construct their senior thesis topic. Also emphasizes editing, publishing, web work, and attention to career choices. Prerequisite: HIST:300 or instructor's permission. 3-4 SH.

    Directed readings in a specific topic in the field, most often in preparation for Senior Seminar. Prerequisite: HIST:300 or instructor's permission. 1-4 SH.
  • 4.00 Credits

    Methods of research and historical analysis and interpretation. Required for history majors. Prerequisite: HIST:300 or instructor's permission. 4 SH. Core: Capstone.
  • 8.00 Credits

    Supervised work in fields related to history including museum work, publishing and editing, historic site surveys and other activities in public history. Not for major or Core credit. Variable credit up to 8 SH.
  • 1.00 - 8.00 Credits

    Detailed exploration of a selected historical period, topic or problem under a faculty member's direction. Involves either a reading program or a major research paper. Open to all majors. Prerequisite: department permission. Variable credit.
