A cross-cultural, interdisciplinary perspective of Asia from the Ancient and Classical period to the 16th century through its religions, arts and literature. Includes the teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Shinto. Covers characteristics and styles of selective Chinese and Japanese painting and art, and nuance of Asian literature will be considered within an historical, social, and cultural context, tracing the intertwined character of religious thought, sentiment, and artistic expression in China and Japan. Prerequisites: 100-level history course or instructor's permission. 4 SH.
