Students will read primary and secondary sources that describe the doctrinal, ecclesiastical and political views of the Covenanters, why they stayed separate from the state church even when Scotland became Presbyterian, and how their legacy has led to the modern day Reformed Presbyterian experience in Scotland. It is structured to provide an introduction to the theological issues, musical developments, and various musical personalities connected to the Western church. While particular emphasis will be given to Reformed Presbyterian worship practice, we will also examine the practices of other Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions.
