One unit. This is an intensive exposure designed to provide the student with practical experience in archaeological fi eld methods. Students will participate in an actual archeological project and explore a number of facets of archaeological fi eldwork. Surveying, mapping, excavation, photography, scientifi c recording, and data analysis are among topics to be addressed. Offered summer session as required.

One unit. This seminar course offers students the opportunity to apply anthropological practice through an experiential learning experience. This may involve either an anthropological research project or an internship at a relevant fi eld site. Students will meet weekly to discuss their fi eld/research experience, drawing connections with their earlier coursework in anthropology, the Anthropology Theory course, and other current issues/debates in anthropology. Students will prepare a major research paper that synthesized the results of their fi eld/research experience. Pre-requisite: AN 201, 202, and 212. Offered fall semester.

One unit. This course examines high points in the development of anthropological theory from the nineteenth to the twenty-fi rst century. Among the major schools of thought included are nineteenth century evolutionism, the Boasian reaction, British and French social anthropology, neo-evolutionism, cultural materialism, symbolic anthropology, political economy, gender theory, practice theory, and post-modernism.

One unit. Designed to provide the advanced student an opportunity to pursue an anthropological problem in a relatively independent manner. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. Offered fall and spring semesters.

One unit. A beginning study of basic problems in two-dimensional design and color. Emphasis is on problem-solving projects and learning the vocabulary of design and color. Content includes basic color theory. Offered fall and spring semesters.

One unit. The development of skills in the representation of objects and the fi gure in terms of line, space, composition, and value. Emphasis is placed on basic drawing techniques and interpretative qualities of various media. Offered fall and spring semesters and summer session.

One unit. A studio course which introduces the techniques of pottery, including hand-built constructions and forms thrown on the potter's wheel. Experience with glaze preparation and kiln fi ring. Offered fall and spring semesters and summer sessions.

One unit. Fundamental techniques and principles of photography as an art form. Craft (camera know-how, developing, printing) and content (what to put on fi lm) and their relationships in visual communication. Darkroom work. Offered fall and spring semesters and summer session.

One unit. An introduction to the basic techniques and aesthetics of digital photography including cameras, tools, printing and on-line imaging.

One unit. The student will create graphics using the Macintosh computer. The making of websites, animation, and print products will demonstrate the knowledge of software concepts and design principles; the use of type, page layout color, digital imaging, and motion. Projects will refl ect the student's personal interests and will form the beginning of a digital portfolio. Offered fall and spring semesters.
