Humankind from its beginnings in Africa to the present. Course focuses on human biological and cultural evolution through prehistoric times, identification of cultural bias in attempts to understand the human past and present, and exploration of the fallacies of racial and cultural superiority. Topics include the development of social stratification, cultural definitions of reality, language and thought, alternative ways of generating cooperation and handling conflict, culture change and "modernization." 3 hr./wk.; 3 cr.

The molecular basis of life, structure, and function in living organisms, reproduction and patterns of inheritance, and human ecology. For students in the Macaulay Honors College at The City College. A broad exposure to the arts in New York City. Attendance at performances, exhibitions and other cultural events is central to the course. Students examine these events from the multiple perspectives of scholarship, creativity and production and enhance their appreciation by investigating the social, historical and aesthetic context of the cultural works. Prereq.: admission to the Macaulay Honors College. 4 hr./wk.; 4 cr.
