Examines on an interpretive basis and from the perspective of a conceptual approach, the history and culture of the United States from the colonial period to the Civil War. The course explores the interrelationships that make the past, present and future a dynamic continuity. The course is geared to help students understand the period's events, ideals, traditions, institutions and forces which have shaped the country so that students may more clearly understand the present and gain perspective that is valuable in formulating possible solutions to the country's problems. Gives nursing applicants an overview of the nursing profession. Topics include the various entry levels of educational preparation and the healthcare opportunities working as a provider, manager and member of the profession. The course provides an introduction to Dorothea Orem's wellness and self-care model and nursing process, critical thinking and communication skills, learning styles/patient teaching, healthcare environment (legal and ethical issues), medical terminology (prefixes, suffixes and root words) and culture (sensitivity, uniqueness and competence). Introduces general principles of pharmacology and utilization of the nursing process in the administration of pharmacologic agents. Students examine several medications in each major drug classification for major effects, major side effects and applicable nursing care. Dosage ranges for some medications are studied. Students practice conversion of dosages from the household and apothecary to the metric system by completing worksheets and solving problems using a personal computer. The course is taught by lecture and auto-tutorial computer review. Prerequisite: HLH 130 Corequisite: HLH 178 Offered: Fall

Provides the introductory theory base for the practical nurse utilizing Dorothea Orem's theory of universal self-care requisites. The basic philosophy of practical nursing, the nursing process and fundamental nursing skills are covered. The laboratory component provides demonstration and practice of skills in simulated patient-care settings. This course is a prerequisite for all future nursing theory courses and must be passed with a minimum grade of 78. Prerequisites: BIO 220, BIO 221, ENG 101, HLH 130, HLH 134 and PSY 111 Offered: Fall

Offers structured clinical experiences in a nursing home designed to enable students to develop proficiency in basic nursing skills learned in HLH 178. Development of interpersonal communication skills with the patient, peers and staff is emphasized. The implementation of nursing care is based on Dorothea Orem's theory of self-care requisites. This is a prerequisite for all future nursing theory and clinical experience, and must be completed with a grade of "Pass." Builds on the fundamentals of the first semester and covers the basic nursing care for patients with various medical-surgical conditions including disorders of all body systems, structure and functions. The nursing process of patient assessment, needs identification, intervention, implementation and evaluation, and pharmacology are reinforced. Consists of the application of the classroom theory provided in HLH 188. It is expected that students will demonstrate identification of signs and symptoms of disease, and will be able to apply the appropriate nursing intervention. Students are expected to demonstrate increasing clinical competence. At the completion of this practicum, it is expected that the nursing student could safely and competently take care of the stable medical-surgical patient in a hospital setting under the supervision of a registered nurse. 6.00 Credits
Includes three major areas of focus. The mental health focus is on patient psychological needs and skilled communication. The maternal-child focus includes the nursing care from the antepartum to the postpartum period. The care of children from infancy through adolescence also is included. Content-specific medications are reviewed. In addition, tips for successfully taking the NCLEX-PN test are included, along with computer-assisted testing (CAT). Students are required to pass the HESI comprehensive exam in order to pass the course.
