This course discusses the theory and practice of personal management in business and pub-lic organizations. It emphasizes the formula-tion and application of personnel policies, procedures and practices, particularly con-cerning employment, wage and salary admin-istration, training and development, employee and labor relations, performance evaluation, termination, promotion, compensation, pensions and benefits. The finding of the be-havioral sciences are integrated, especially in exploring issues of labor-management interac-tion and cooperation on mutual issues of or-ganizational planning, industrial counseling, and work performance and compensation. This course examines the practices and prob-lems of starting and operating a small busi-ness. Topics including capital accumulation, the assessment of local markets, site location, and decision-making techniques of the small business entrepreneur are explored, and the role of small business in the United States economy is evaluated. Case study and prob-lem solving techniques are used, as students interact with local small business owners to analyze real world business conditions. Many good ideas fail because projects are not completed on time or fail to produce results. Avoiding these traps requires a clear under-standing of a project's requirements and ob-jectives and strong project management. This course helps prepare management students for the complexity of project and program management by providing them with the skills they need to properly define a project's scope, adequately plan for resource allocation, build and manage the project team, and successfully track the progress of the project to a success-ful completion . Adult learners explore the values and percep-tions of selected groups affecting social and economic life though an analysis of policies and practices of recruitment, selection, train-ing, development and compensation of em-ployees. Special attention is given to Equal Opportunity and Office of Safety and Health Administration legislation through a series of case studies and simulations. OM/MGT 415 Strategic Planning (3 credits) This course introduces adult learners to vari-ous management planning models and tech-nique and applies these to business cases. It stresses the concepts of strategic planning and strategic management.

This course explores the behavioral patterns of business activity influenced by national borders and different institutional environ-ments. A comparative study of national envi-ronments provides a sound basis for discrimi-natory application of management theory. The international monetary systems, regional trade groups, home and host country policies in trade and international investments are ex-amined. (fall) Prerequisite: Any 200 and 300 level business courses or permission of department chair-person.

In this integrative and comprehensive cap-stone course the student pursuing an educa-tion in sports will be expected to bring to-gether the various aspects of their previous education in business and sports management. The course will emphasize strategic manage-ment and competitive planning based upon a clear understanding of internal and external environmental factors.
