Supports teacher candidates in updating reflective portfolios that demonstrate links between courses in education and content areas with professional standards, department goals, and field experiences. The seminar focuses on professional collaboration, legal, and certification experiences requirements for student teachers. Field placements are required. Participation in individual conferences and formal evaluation of the portfolio before being recommended for admission to student teaching is required. This course should be taken in the semester one takes the content area test, but no later than the semester before student teaching. Music education majors take music 362 instead of SEC 370. Must be completed the term prior to student teaching. Prerequisite: SEC 300. Pass/No Pass Grading. May be listed by subject department.

An advanced study of developmental characteristics, learning principles, teaching methods, instructional materials, short and long-range planning, unit and lesson planning, and mastery of specified competencies and research regarding the teaching-learning process for adolescents. Participatory field experiences are required. Prerequisites: SEC 223, 311. Usually taken junior or senior year, in the term prior to the subject-specific methods course (e.g. SEC 463, HIS 440, etc.)

An advanced study of the scope and sequence, content, and skills of the National Council for the Social Sciences (NCSS) Standards and the Illinois Social Science Standards in combination with methods and strategies for teaching the middle school (grades 6-12) social studies curricula as well as an overview of Illinois history. Prerequisite: prior or concurrent enrollment in SEC 410.

Open only to those preparing to teach in grades six through 12. Full-day assignment to a public school for 10 weeks (2 courses) or 15 weeks (3 courses). Attendance at seminar sessions is required. Beginning fall 2014, SEC 455 will only be offered as three courses with a 15 wek placement. Prerequisite: SEC 370 or subject department equivalent. Pass/No Pass grading.

Open only to those preparing to teach in grades kindergarten through 12 in a special subject area for a minimum of 15 weeks. Full-day assignments in two settings (elementary/middle and high school) each for a 7-8 week period. Attendance at seminar sessions is required. Beginning fall 2014, SEC 457 will only be offered as 3 courses. Prerequisite: SEC 370 or subject department equivalent. Pass/No Pass grading.

A consideration of curricular design, lab materials, textbkook evaluations, and general pedagogical principles as applied to the teaching of natural science. The main product of this course is a unit plan that aligns with the National Science Education Standards. Prerequisites: SEC 300 and consent of the department in which the student majors. For students pursuing the science education minor, SEC 463 may be substituted for EDU 327.

A scientific study of society and social interaction and their effects on individual behavior. An introduction to the concepts, theories, and methods used by sociologists to study social life. Special attention is given to how the sociological perspective can enhance our ability to understand society and to function more effectively in it. Fall Term, Spring Term.

A study of the meaning and influence of culture and its societal variations. The course focuses on culture as the way people live and adapt to their environments, and emphasizes the diversity of cultural patterns around the world. Fall Term, Spring Term.

A course designed to assist student understanding of the role of the media in representing and shaping the societal context and life experiences of African Americans in the U.S. A variety of media genre will be examined: Hollywood film, independent film, and documentary. Connections will be drawn between media representations at various time periods and the concomitant social, political, and economic situations of African Americans. Works by whites and by blacks will be compared. Prerequisite for SOC 313: SOC 211 or equivalent.* January Term.

A study of the structure and function of health care as a societal institution. Socio-cultural and structural factors that influence (1) health care professionals146 role development and performance; (2) families146 health practices, use of the health care system, and illness behavior; and (3) the interactions of clients and professionals. Critiques of the U.S. health care system and proposed reforms are examined. Prerequisite for SOC 316: SOC 211 or equivalent.* Spring Term.
