    This is the second course in a two course research sequence that intorduces students to concepts in data analysis. Content includes analyses and interpretation of univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistics appropriate for various kinds of data and levels of measurement used in social work practice. Students will learn data collection, data entry, data processing, and data analysis using the SPSS software package.Credit, three hours.

The student is expected to engage in conducting empirical inquiry through the use of qualitative and/or quantitative methods. The course utilized statistical procedures in the analysis of data.     The course examines social work practice theories and concepts for administration, management, and supervision. Particular emphasis is placed on duties and responsibilities of social work administrators as they pertain to political, economic, and bureaucratic realities that restrict delivery of needed services to client systems and to workers' mission as agents for change. Provides a framework for action for the worker/supervisor/administrator as a "change agent" in the social welfare system. Content on management in not-for-profit settings is addressed.Prerequisites: Second year status.Credit, three hours.

    The course explores ethnicity, culture, values, and ethics as central concepts in advanced social work practice in all human service settings with individuals, communities, and organizations. The manner by which these realities are critical to social work practice in Americas is considered. The course examines cross-cultural differences with emphasis on social work practice when empowerment and the Black Perspective are central elements for advanced level practice. The course examines the transactions among and between the client and the worker within the context of ethnicity, culture, values, and ethics.Prerequisites: Second year status.Credit, three hours.

    The course examines legal base of organized social welfare and social work practice through the study of social legislation, judicial decisions, the legislative process, development of administrative regulation, and court organization. The course presents an overview of legal principles for application to social work practice. Special attention is given to laws pertaining to the family, the field of mental health and child welfare, malpractice, and courtroom testimony.Credit, three hours.

    This course introduces the student to the study of the healthcare, social welfare and educational systems of another country. The course involves didactic information and transformative experiential learning via the study abroad approach. It is designed to provide interculture knowledge and competence, ethical reasoning and opportunities for inquiry and analysis, cross-disciplinary teamwork, and problem solving. Students will gain scientific knowledge needed to understand education, health, and public policy in a global context. Additionally, the student will gain a comparative knowledge of the world's peoples and problems, as well as explore the dynamics and tensions of the world in a naturalistic laboratory setting that explores these connections.Credit, three hours

    To be taken by first-year students in the field. Provides students with opportunities to employ the knowledge, values, skills and conceptual frameworks that are related to the generalist perspective in agency settings while under the supervision of an approved field instructor. Students are enable to develop and refine the skills necessary for effective advanced practice and to integrate the concepts and philosophy of empowerment, the generalist perspective to social work practice, and the Black Perspective in the helping process with all client systems. (All students must take twelve (12) credit hours of field instruction). Note: The grade "B" must be earned in all practice classes. All students in the field are required to have liability insurance before entering the field placement agency. Students enrolled in field practicum must also be enrolled in the appropriate practice course. Students must consult with their academic advisor to: (1) determine the appropriate field practice course to take, and (2) to select the appropriate course (s). Students are assigned a field placement that runs concurrently with academic course work. First and second year placements are based on the learning opportunities of the placement site and the student's learning needs. Students are not given credit for previous work experience in the field. A student requesting to use his/her work place as a field placement is not recommended and is rarely approved. However, students who are employed in a human service agency where there is an individual with a M.S.W. present must seek permission from the Director of Field Instruction first and fill out a workplace proposal form found in the field manual online. Note: Field Placements do not cater to student's schedule.Credit, two hours.
