In order to participate and enroll in Cooperative Education, students must meet the following criteria: Assigned to and expected to graduate from a career-based academic program; Secured a paid or unpaid internship site (minimum of one month prior to the semester); Secure any clearances required by the employer/organization; Follow established processes; and complete and submit all required forms.

This course is designed to introduce aviation to the novice student. Students will learn the origins of aviation through present day and into the future. Students will be provided an overview of each major course comprising the Aviation Technology program. Subject matter pertaining to airspace, navigation, meteorology, aerodynamics, safety, legal, systems and cross-country planning will be introduced. In-class learning will be reinforced using Redbird Advanced Aviation Training Devices, with simulator hours interspersed throughout the semester. The course will conclude with discussions regarding vocations in aviation such as commercial pilots, air traffic controllers, aviation management personnel and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle pilots. New students will have the opportunity to experience aviation prior to deciding their career choice.

The lab focuses on enriching students' skill sets in aerodynamics, meteorological adaptation and navigational practices and cultivating proficiency in Crew and Single-Pilot Resource Management (CRM/SRM). This optional lab aims to prepare students thoroughly for the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam and build foundational skills for future flight training and certifications.

Students complete the dual and solo flight time requirements including preflight and postflight briefings and required stage exams. Students must pass the FAA Private Pilot Practical Exam to obtain a Private Pilot Certificate in order to successfully complete the course. The FAA requires a minimum of 35 hours of flight time in this course; however, the actual flight hours may vary based on student proficiency. A valid Second Class Medical Certificate is required to begin this course.
